If you have seen videos of warm water cascading over someone’s scalp while they drift off, you have already met the Japanese head spa. The Japanese head spa in Sydney has quickly become one of the most requested self-care treatments, and for good reason: it is part deep relaxation, part scalp care, and part quiet time away from screens. This guide explains what a Japanese head spa in Sydney actually involves, the benefits you can expect, and how to choose the right length of treatment for you.
What is a Japanese head spa?
A Japanese head spa is a therapeutic treatment focused on the scalp, hair, neck and shoulders. It began in Japanese salons as a way to keep the scalp clean and healthy, because a healthy scalp supports healthy hair. Over time it grew into a full ritual that combines a scalp analysis, deep cleansing, gentle exfoliation, steam and a long, rhythmic massage.
Unlike a quick shampoo-and-rub at a hair salon, a head spa is slow and deliberate. The therapist uses specific Japanese pressure-point techniques around the head, temples, neck and shoulders, and the treatment usually takes place in a quiet, dim room on a dedicated head spa bed with a basin built in.

The benefits of a Japanese head spa
Everyone experiences a head spa a little differently, but these are the benefits our clients mention most:
- Deep relaxation. Slow, rhythmic massage of the head, neck and shoulders helps release built-up tension, which is why so many people fall asleep on the bed.
- A cleaner, more balanced scalp. Cleansing and gentle scrubbing lift away oil, product and dead skin build-up that ordinary shampooing can miss.
- Healthier-feeling hair. Massage encourages circulation to the scalp, and conditioning treatments leave hair soft and shiny.
- Relief from everyday strain. Work on the temples, forehead and around the eyes can ease the heavy feeling that comes with long days at a desk or on a phone.
- Time just for you. An hour without notifications is a benefit in itself.
A head spa is a wellness treatment rather than a medical one. If you have a scalp condition, a skin condition or ongoing hair loss, it is worth speaking with your GP or a dermatologist as well. You can read more in our guide to head spa for hair loss and dandruff.
What happens during a Japanese head spa?
At Saifaro Beauty every head spa begins with a short chat about how your scalp and hair feel, and anything you would like us to focus on. A typical 60-minute ritual then follows these steps:
- Scalp analysis, so we can see how much oil and build-up is present.
- A nourishing scalp serum to prepare the skin.
- Japanese head, neck and shoulder massage.
- Deep cleansing with shampoo and conditioner, paired with massage.
- A gentle scalp scrub to exfoliate.
- Hot towel, steam and a soothing water flow.
- Hair lotion, a finishing massage and a gentle dry.

- Japanese Dry Head Spa (30 min, $40) – seated, with no water or oil. A quick reset you can fit into a lunch break.
- Rest & Glow (60 min, $70) – the full wet head spa and our most popular first visit.
- The Signature Touch (90 min, $100) – adds a facial cleanse, eye care and a hand massage.
- The Royal Reset (120 min, $150) – our most complete ritual, with a foot massage as well.
All four are available for women and men, and you can compare them side by side on our price list.
